ABOUT OPENID CONNECT
OpenID Connect is a well established authentication and authorization technology that is based on the OAuth2 protocol. It is undoubtedly the fastest and most convenient method of authentication for people, and now it is available with Freja eID.
While the specific technical details are somewhat complex to explain is simple terms, the important thing to understand is that there are several actors:
- resource owner – the user who wishes to access your service/website
- client – your service/website/application
- authorization server – Freja eID server
- resource server – the API of the service your user is trying to access
This back and forth between systems makes authentications through OpenID Connect extremely safe when it comes to security, and quick for the end user.
HOW IT WORKS WITH FREJA eID
Once you integrate with Freja eID via OpenID Connect, your users will be able to choose to ‘Continue with Freja eID’. This would usually be when they need to select a login method, if you offer multiple ones.
After selecting ‘Continue with Freja eID’ the user would then be taken to our authentication screen where they would prove their identity with the Freja eID mobile application.
WHY YOU SHOULD INTEGRATE WITH OPEN ID CONNECT
The fundamental reason should of course be for you to provide your users a safe and smooth experience when accessing your website/service. In addition to this, OpenID Connect integration is much simpler and quicker when compared to other methods, requiring less developer time and resources to set up for 2 reasons:
- Because of OpenID Connect’s standardised protocols, backend integration is quick and simple
- There is virtually no developer time required to create the frontend as all users will be using our authentication screen
