Thank you for subscribing to Freja eID services.
Freja eID is an electronic identification (eID) solution for citizens and organisations which can be used for verifying one's identity in a number of online and real-life situations. The essential part of Freja eID service is a smartphone application which can be used for authentication and signing to all the services that are connected to the user´s eID. The second part is a web portal – My Pages – where the user can control how their eID is to be used and has a full record of their user history.
Freja eID offers great flexibility in terms of addressing end users registered with Freja eID. For example, their identity assurance level can vary depending on the type of service they want to connect their eID to.
The entry-level registration, where a user will have confirmed an email address, is perfectly enough to allow, for example, authentication in situations where an absolute identity is not of significance for the relying party - knowing that the end user accessing a relying party's service is the same one that accessed the service a week ago without the hassle of teaching the end user an additional password is perfectly enough for many web-based services.
However, some relying parties might require a higher identity assurance level for their users, in which case, they should add an ID document to their Freja eID or upgrade their Freja eID Plus, if they are Swedish citizens.
Users may add a chosen ID document by submitting its data as well as taking an ID photo via the Freja eID app. This data then undergoes security checks among which is verification against official records of relevant Swedish government institutions that issued the documents. If everything is valid, the user is upgraded to a higher level of assurance and is granted with the ability to prove their identity and age, for example, in online contexts where peer-to-peer identification is required.
Users from Sweden who have successfully added an ID document may apply for the highest level of identity assurance that we offer - Freja eID Plus. Because this level has been certified by the Swedish government for the quality mark 'Svensk e-legitimation', users must undergo an in-person security check with their ID document at one of the stores of our ATG partner. We call this step ID Vetting. Once they are approved, users may use Freja eID Plus to access online government services which require the highest level of assurance of the real-life identity of the user.
This document contains instructions for relying party applications on how to use the Freja eID Customer Environment and the mobile application in Test Mode for testing purposes.
Freja eID mobile application is available for Android and iOS mobile platforms. This applies also to the Test Mode version. The minimum required version of iOS is 10 and for Android, it is Android 5.0 Lollipop with API level 21.
Starting the Freja eID Mobile Application in Test Mode
To start the Freja eID mobile application in test mode, follow these steps:
Download the Freja eID application from the store and open it.
Please note that Verisec has two different mobile applications in the stores: Freja Mobile and Freja eID. On this occasion, make sure you downloaded the Freja eID application and not Freja Mobile.
When you open the Freja eID application for the first time, you will need to select the country where you will primarily be using Freja eID. Currently, whichever country you choose the differences are negligible. For the sake of testing, however, select Sweden so you can try out all the available options offered by Freja eID. Note that from this screen you can also add a new device to an existing account or restore an active account. After you select country, choose whether you want to receive notifications from Freja eID or not.
When you get to the screen where the app prompts you to accept Freja eID's General Terms and Conditions and Privacy policy, toggle the 'General Terms and Conditions' button six times to enter the test mode.
On the next screen, tap 'Start test mode' to confirm that you want to use the Freja eID mobile application in test mode.
As a result of the previous action, if you are using Android, the test mode will be activated automatically and you will be redirected to the splash screen. On iOS, however, for the changes to take effect, the application will need to close (you will be informed about it in a pop-up). When you launch the application again, the test mode will be activated.
You will recognise the test mode by the colour of the header - it will be orange, instead of the blue one in the real production application. The application stays in test mode until you delete it from the device.
Now you can start using the Freja eID application for testing.
Basic Registration
To go through the basic registration, make sure you have the application running in the test mode and then follow these steps:
Select your country again and tap 'Next'.
Accept Freja eID's General Terms and Conditions and the Privacy policy by toggling the buttons and then clicking 'Accept'.
Next, the app prompts you to enter an email address. Please note that, in order to complete the registration process, you need to provide a valid email address that you have access to. Once you have entered the email address, tap 'Send' and then confirm that the provided address is correct in a pop-up window. An email with the confirmation link will be sent to the provided email address.
Open your email inbox and find the confirmation email from Freja eID. To confirm the registration, tap/click 'Confirm'. In a few seconds, you will be informed that your email address is successfully connected to your Freja eID and you will be redirected back to the Freja eID mobile app.
This confirmation email has a validity period of 10 minutes. If that period expires before you confirm the email, you will have to resend the confirmation email within the app. The confirmation email can be resent two times, after which you need to restart the registration.
Next, the Freja eID mobile application prompts you to set your PIN code. Enter and confirm a PIN of your choice with at least 6 digits. This PIN will be used in the future every time you wish to use functionalities of Freja eID.
If you have the fingerprint authentication (Touch ID on iOS) or face recognition (Face ID on iOS) enabled on your device, the app will prompt you to enable its usage instead of the PIN in Freja eID. If you wish to use this option, confirm it in a pop-up.
When the PIN (and optionally, fingerprint or face authentication) is set, Freja eID app will immediately prompt you to add an ID document and upgrade your Freja eID account. You can choose whether you want to do it right away or finalise that process later. In the latter case, after you tap ''Finalise Later'', you will be taken to the home screen, where your pending login and sign actions will appear and from where you can choose to add a document.
At this stage, you have completed basic Freja eID registration. You can now start a login action using the user's email address (according to the Freja eID Relying Party Developers' Documentation > Authentication services > Initiate authentication method).
If you would like to start a login action using user's social security number (personnummer), you need to upgrade your Freja eID by adding a valid ID document o registering for Freja eID Plus. In that case, please follow the instructions on how to upgrade below.
Possible Errors when Registering
Certain errors might occur during the registration process:
- The web-socket connection may be terminated during the registration process, in which case a connection error pop-up will appear. Ignore the error, the application will reconnect to the server within 3 seconds.
- Confirmation email might not be delivered. Try resending the email or redo the whole process again.
- Each email address can be used only once. If you try to use the same email address on multiple devices, you will get a registration error.
Multiple registrations
If you need to repeat the registration with the same email address for testing purposes, you can either opt to restore your account following instructions in the app or delete your user account from the database using the Test Vetting Portal (see below) and from the Settings menu on the Freja eID mobile application.
Adding ID document
Note that adding an ID document is currently available only in Sweden and Norway, while in the other countries user can do the basic registration only.
Before You Begin
Freja eID application offers an automatic data entry for some of the ID documents. This is done via OCR (optical character recognition or optical character reader) functionality within the app. If you would like to test this functionality, you may do so with a Swedish driving licence or passport. In Norway, currently we only support passport. If these documents are chosen, Freja eID will ask you to scan the document.
Other Swedish documents that can be added are National ID card, Tax Agency ID card and SIS-marked ID (horizontal and vertical). For these documents, however, data needs to be entered manually. Manual entry is available as an option for driving licence and passport, too.
Personal identity numbers (personnummer) referred to below need to be correctly formatted but need not actually exist in the real world. Personal data associated with such accounts is randomized in the test system but will be persistent across registrations with the same personal identity number.
Procedure
To add an ID document to Freja eID account, follow these steps:
Launch the Freja eID application. The app will open on the home screen. Tap 'Add Document' card to initiate the process. (Tapping the info icon in the upper right corner opens a page with information about your current status and steps you can take next.)
On the next page, you can read about the benefits of adding a document as well as short instructions on how to do it. Tap 'I'm Ready'.
Choose an ID document by tapping on the list item.
If you have chosen a document which can be scanned with OCR, you will be prompted to scan it and the data will be filled in automatically. Check the data and if everything is OK, tap 'Data is correct' to continue. If for some reason scanning fails, after a few seconds you will be prompted to take a photo of the document and you will need to enter the required data manually (see the instructions under step 5)).
If you have chosen any other type of document (or if you were not able to scan your chosen document), follow these steps:
Take a photo of the chosen ID document with the app (allow camera access to Freja eID previously).
Enter a personal identity number (personnummer or social security number (SSN)). This is a 12-digit number and should be entered in a format YYYYMMDDXXXX.
Enter the information about the chosen ID document - the reference number in the required format and the expiry date, using the date picker.
Check one more time if everything is in order and then tap 'Data is correct'.
You are now prompted to take an ID photo. This photo is used in the vetting process, when the Freja eID vetting agent compares this photo, together with the photo from the ID document, and the user him- or herself. It is also used as a profile picture in My Pages, the user portal, and in future versions, for restoring Freja eID+ on a new device. Tap 'Next'.
Follow the instructions for the facial register.
Choose an ID photo from a presented selection by tapping the desired image. When you select your ID photo, your application is complete.
In a real-life scenario, the data is sent to us for security checks. After they are approved, users are notified via email and a popup in the app that they had added their document successfully.
For testing purposes, however, after your application is complete you will need to use our Test Vetting Portal to manually upgrade your test account. For details, see below.
Once data is verified, the result is immediately visible on the home screen in the form of a UI element reminiscent of a digital ID card. This element contains your data i.e. your name, surname and picture. Additionally, the card shows the ID document you are verified with.To use Freja eID for identification purposes, tap the card and enter PIN or biometrics. On the next screen, read the information about how to use Freja eID and tap 'OK'. The final screen is your digital ID card, which contains your photo, your name and age, as well as a QR code and a 'Share link' feature, both of which open an HTML page containing the same data (name, surname and age).
Applying for Freja eID Plus (Sweden Only)
If your chosen country is Sweden, once you have successfully added an ID document, you will have a pending action to get Freja eID Plus.
Procedure
Tap the 'Get Government Approved Freja eID Plus' pending action in your action list. This will bring up the following screen where you can read more about Freja eID Plus and how to get it.
When you tap 'Continue', a list of Freja eID authorised vetting agents will be displayed, ordered by the nearest to your location, or alphabetically if you didn't allow Location Services. You can also see agents on a map.
Tap 'Continue' and enter your PIN or biometrics to open the QR code that would be shown to the ATG clerk to be scanned.
In a real-life scenario, the end user is expected to go to the Freja eID vetting agent and confirm their identity by presenting the chosen physical ID document and the Freja eID mobile app with a QR code screen.
For testing purposes, however, you will need to use our Test Vetting Portal to upgrade yourself to Plus in the same manner as when you verified your ID document. For details, see below.

Once the account is deleted, you will need to reinstall the app and enter test mode before being able to register again.
Multiple Device Functionality
Freja eID supports multiple device functionality allowing users to connect up to 3 devices to a single Freja eID account.
Adding a device
In order to add a new device to a Freja eID account follow these steps:
Install the Freja eID application on another device and select 'Add device' in the lower left corner.
A QR code will appear on the new device with instructions. This QR code needs to be scanned by the device where Freja eID is already enabled.
On the device that already has Freja eID enabled i.e. your main device, navigate to the Settings menu and choose 'Add device'. A QR code scanner will open that will enable you to scan the QR code on the device you are adding.
After scanning is successful, you will need to confirm adding via PIN or fingerprint. After confirmation, you will get a success pop up on the new device.
Now it is time to set a PIN and/or fingerprint on the new device. The PIN on it may match the PIN on your main device but that is not necessary.
Congratulations, you may now use Freja eID on multiple devices.
After you have added a device to your Freja eID, you will only be able to use Freja eID one device at a time i.e. it is not possible to be in the application on two devices simultaneously. Whenever you launch Freja eID on one device, the session on the other one(s) will be terminated. There will be a pop up in the application informing you about this. (see image below)
If you have added device(s) to your account and then upgraded to Freja eID+, you will need to redo the process of adding for security reasons.
